Planning Your Maldives Getaway: How to Choose the Ideal Resort
The Maldives is super easy to travel to, but picking the right resort can be tricky with so many options to consider. With my four and a half years of experience exploring the Maldives, I’ll share insider tips to help you select the right resort for an unforgettable experience. These tips are typically known by travel agents and seasoned travelers, so read on to get an edge in planning your Maldivian getaway. Choosing the right resort can make or break your Maldives experience, so pay close attention to these key factors.
Understanding Your Trip’s Purpose
Is it a romantic honeymoon, a family vacation, or a group trip? Different resorts cater to specific traveler types, so this will help narrow down your options. Honeymooners might prefer adults-only resorts, which offer private, romantic atmospheres with unique experiences tailored to couples. Families, on the other hand, should look for resorts with child-friendly amenities and activities to keep kids entertained and safe. Group travelers may need resorts that can accommodate larger groups with extra space and flexible room arrangements. Additionally, some resorts cater to specific nationalities, creating a culturally familiar environment. This can make guests feel more at home and comfortable during their stay.

Budget is Key
Your budget is fundamental to shaping your Maldives experience, as it will determine the type of accommodation, meals, and activities available to you. The Maldives offers a range of options, from luxury resorts to more affordable hotels and guesthouses on local islands. Staying on a local island, for instance, can be a fantastic way to explore the Maldives on a budget. However, keep in mind that alcohol is only available in resorts, as the Maldives is a Muslim country.
Good to know: While exploring the Maldives through local islands can be budget-friendly, keep in mind that alcohol isn’t available there since it’s a Muslim country. Alcohol is only served at resorts and at Hulhule Island Hotel (HIH), which is located on the airport island. So, if you’re on a local island, you won’t be able to enjoy a stunning sunset beer.
For those opting for a resort experience, another aspect to consider is the transfer cost. Resorts closer to Malé typically use speedboats for transfers, which are more affordable and convenient. Resorts further away often require seaplane transfers, which are pricier but offer breathtaking views of the Maldivian islands. To get a feel for the scenery, check out our Instagram and Pinterest pages, where we share our own seaplane views!
Meal plans can also impact your budget. Maldivian resorts offer various plans, such as Bed & Breakfast (BB), Half Board (HB), Full Board (FB), or All-Inclusive (AI). You’ll need to decide which option suits your budget and dining preferences. Additionally, if you’re planning excursions, keep in mind that these activities can add to your costs. Popular activities like diving, snorkeling, and sunset cruises vary in price from one resort to another. For in-depth budgeting tips, our article, “Explore the Maldives on a Budget,” covers essential cost-saving strategies.
Location and Accessibility
The Maldives is an archipelago of 26 atolls, each with its own unique character. Consider which atoll best suits your interests and travel style. Here’s a breakdown of popular atolls and what they offer:
Baa Atoll: A UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve known for its diving, with Hanifaru Bay being a hotspot for manta rays. The atoll is also home to a variety of other marine life, including whale sharks, turtles, and nurse sharks. This is my favorite atoll so far, and it’s also a top choice for many other travelers.
Raa Atoll: A popular atoll with pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and lagoons. It’s also home to some of the Maldives’ most exclusive resorts.
North Malé Atoll: Known for its white sand beaches and turquoise waters. It’s also close to the airport and accessible by speedboat.
Lhaviyani Atoll: A good place to stay at a luxury resort, relaxing getaway with beachfront and overwater villas and bungalows. And one of my favorite atolls to stay.
Kaafu Atoll: A tourism hub with a variety of accommodation options. Offers a combination of Maldivian hospitality and stunning natural beauty.
If you’re an underwater enthusiast, select a resort with a house reef to snorkel directly from your villa. Some resorts actively engage in marine conservation, offering enriching experiences like coral restoration.
Another important factor is accessibility. Resorts closer to Malé often have speedboat transfers, which are quicker and more affordable than seaplanes. However, more remote atolls accessible only by seaplane can offer a truly secluded experience.
Privacy and Atmosphere
The Maldives is all about privacy and relaxation, so be sure to choose a resort that aligns with your desired ambiance. Smaller resorts often offer a more intimate setting, while larger resorts can provide a livelier, more social experience. If you’re looking for a private escape, consider staying in an overwater villa, which tends to offer more seclusion than beach villas.
Tip: You can choose to experience both by booking a split stay, spending a few nights in an overwater villa and a few in a beach villa. This approach provides the best of both worlds and can help manage costs, as beach villas are usually less expensive than overwater accommodations.
Further, Some resorts also focus on specific nationalities, creating a familiar cultural atmosphere that can make guests feel more at ease. The privacy and atmosphere of a resort are essential aspects to consider, and our Premium Plan can help you select the perfect setting based on your personal preferences.
Excursions and Activities
Finally, the Maldives offers truly unique excursion experiences, but it’s best to plan ahead and check what’s available at your chosen resort. Excursions can vary widely from one resort to another, so researching in advance will help you make the most of your trip. Most of the resort offers almost same excursions, so knowing what’s available in advance will help you make the most of your trip. For more details, check out our article “Must-Try Excursions in the Maldives” for a full rundown. Here are some popular excursions you won’t want to miss:
Snorkeling: Exploring the reef is a must, but not every resort has an amazing reef, so make sure to verify this before booking.
Scuba Diving: Dive deep to discover the incredible marine life unique to the Maldives.
Sunset Cruise: Enjoy a beautiful sunset, and if you’re lucky, you might spot dolphins along the way!
Sandbank Tour: A truly magical experience that brings peace to the soul—trust me, it’s unforgettable.
